The Philippine music industry continues to look promising despite the consequences of the pandemic.
Blueprint.PH’s big data analytics reveals that P-pop, rap and acoustic continue to be popular among Filipino Facebook users, with OPM artists joining the top 10 list of issues posted on or discussed by Filipinos.
Ranked according to engagement scores or the interactions of comments, reactions and likes, the most popular and hottest OPM artist on Facebook in May 2021 was the rising P-pop group, SB19.
Generating an engagement score of 519,733 from 1,913 posts in May, SB19 debuted in 2018 with members Josh, Justin, Ken, Pablo and Stell. The group was one of the nominees of the Billboard Social Media artist pitted against international superstars BTS, Blackpink, Seventeen, and Ariana Grande. They are the first Filipino and Southeast Asian musicians nominated in any category into the Billboard.
SB19’s new song releases, fan active engagement activities and a very active social media presence through the loving support of their fans, A’tin (SB19 got 97% love reactions from fans’ posts) make SB19 one of the most talked about topics online. The group released a new song, Mapa, now with more than 3.2 million views on Youtube after its release last May 16. The top engaging post for SB19 is the announcement of their upcoming online concert this July, with an engagement score of more than 19,000
Placing second as the most discussed OPM artist on Facebook is Ben&Ben with an engagement score of 217,020.90 from 782 posts. Ben&Ben was the most streamed OPM artist in Spotify in 2020. They have more than 2 million Spotify followers and 1.7 million Youtube Subscribers. They released the official music video of their song Leaves, and currently have more than 2.6 million views since its premiere on May 28. Following Ben and Ben is former Rivermaya member, Rico Blanco, with an engagement score of 150,732 from 170 posts. The former RiverMaya member, composer, and artist Rico Blanco trended in Facebook with the news of his relationship with young actress Maris Racal. This is the most engaging score for Rico Blanco
Rapper Skusta Clee is at Number 4 with 95,940 engagement score from 238 posts. Skusta Clee is a former member of the Filipino hiphop collective Ex Battalion. He has millions of followers in different platforms such as more than 1.4 million Spotify subscribers, and his Youtube channel has 2.2 million subscribers. To date, Skusta Clee is number one in Facebook Trending with his song Lagi, having 4.2 million views in two days. The top engaging score for the rapper is this post from ReneJay
Another Ppop/boyband group, BGYO follows Skusta Clee at number 5 with an engagement score of 56,558 from 680 posts. BGYO is a five-member P-pop band composed of Akira, Gelo, JL, Mikkin, and Nate, who were formed from the reality talent show Star Hunt Academy. The highest engaging post for BGYO is the release of their new music video, the original soundtrack of He’s Into Her, from the Facebook Page iWantTFC.
Another veteran rocker, Ely Buendia follows at number 6 with an engagement score of 55,348. The former frontman of the iconic band Eraserheads found himself trending after the revelation in an interview that he and his former bandmates were never friends. This post from the Facebook Page anti pop punk pop punk club is the top engaging post for Ely Buendia.
Popstar Sarah Geronimo or Sarah G is at number 7 with an engagement score of 53,159 from 571 posts. Popstar Sarah Geronimo released via streaming from Vivamax her digital concert last March, Tala: The Film Concert. The top engaging post for Sarah G.is her message to Rabiya Mateyo in this article from Pep.pH with an engagement score of 7,421.4
International singer, Broadway star and Tony Awardee Ms. Lea Salonga places eighth with an engagement score of 51,728 from 143 posts. Ms Lea is active in social media especially in Twitter where she has 5.4 million followers. She tweets about topics such as Stop Asian Hate, Pride Month and her love for the South Korean Superstars, BTS. For this month, the top engaging posts for Ms. Lea was from Team Babes with more than 41,000 engagement score
Moira dela Torre comes at Number 9 with an engagement score of 50911 from 201 posts. Moira dela Torre is one of the most popular female singers to date; her Facebook page has more than 4.5 million followers, and almost 2.5 million Spotify listeners. Her song Paubaya has more than 88 million streams in Spotify and the music video released early this year has more than 29 million views. For this month, her new profile pic on her official Facebook page had the highest engagement score with more than 20,000 engagement score
Finally wrapping up the top 10 is the hiphop collective, Ex battalion, with an engagement score of 50,991 from 103 posts. Ex battalion is very popular among Youtube users, as their channel has more than 2 million subscribers and the single they released in April has currently more than 31 million views.
