Filipinos overwhelmingly posted about their favorite Korea entertainers in the month of June 2021, sustaining a second month of making the keyword category Korean Wave the top topic among Filipinos on Facebook.

Previous to the past two months, Filipinos had posted more about their faith in God and in the Catholic Church with the keyword category Faith the top keyword from January to April 2021.

These are the findings of the big data analysis conducted by political communications firm Blueprint.PH, which collected the top 50 trending keywords daily to measure the topics Filipinos interact with in Facebook. For June, 1,520 keywords of various themes and topics were collected.

Let us take a look at the top keyword categories for the month of June, where the top 10 categories have a total engagement score 152,388,452.

Korean Wave thriving at number 1, followed by Faith

Number 1 is Korean Wave with an engagement score of 71,229,158 or 47% of the total top 10 engagement score. Korean Wave’s engagement score from May to June increased by 75% as comebacks of Kpop artists happening drove this increase In number. 

International South Korean groups and Kpop groups such as BTS, Exo, Twice, TXT, Seventeen, among others, released their albums or singles together with an array of music videos, fan engagement activities, practice videos, brand endorsements, etc, which are shown on social media platforms. 

The top most engaging keyword under Korean Wave was the Kpop group Twice with the release of their comeback album, Taste of Love and their song Alcohol Free –making them the keywords with the most engagement on Facebook among Filipinos in June 2021. 

Twice has been listed as one of the top three Kpop groups in the country, and their June comeback proved that they deserved the top spot. Twice ranked Number 1 in the daily trending keywords for 10 days out of 30, and BTS ranked number 1 for five days out of 30 days in June.

The top post for Korean Wave is from GMA News with an engagement score of 62,000, “Ayon sa mag-asawang Darren at Louisse Esmade, nanood muna sila ng video tutorial ng “What is Love?” ng TWICE para sa kanilang first dance”.

Following Korean wave, the second most popular keyword is still Faith at number 2 with an engagement score of 42,948,445 or 28% of the total top 10, enjoying an increase of 6% in engagement score compared with last month. 

The top three trending keywords under this keyword category are “500yearsofchristianity”, “avemaria”, and “catholic”, while Quiapo Church appeared twice as number one trending keyword in two days out of 30. 

The highest engaging post under this category showed how Filipinos give importance to fathers, as this was from from Quiapo Church’s Facebook page, “PANALANGIN PARA SA MGA AMA” a Father’s Day post with an engagement score of more than 21,000.

At third place is E-sports with an engagement score of 9,385,051. E-sports has been one of the top keywords in the monthly rankings, making it a very popular and influential activity in Philippine society, and at the same time an emerging sport where Filipino professional players are thriving. The top keywords under e-sports are exeshot, msc2021, and comeback legends. Exeshot gained the number 1 spot once in June. The top engaging post under this category was from the Facebook Page Z4pnu, “#GiveBillyATrophy is real! The long wait is over as we are your MSC 2021 CHAMPIONS! Thank you for the support, EXE Fam!

Covid-19 ranked at number 4 with an engagement score of 6,464,180. Compared with May, there was a 17% increase in engagement on Covid-19 issues. Keywords related to Covid-19 are Covid-19, Coronavirus, ingatangatbakunalahat. The top engaging post for Covid-19 is from the Facebook Page, Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM: “Bakuna o kulong? Ito ang banta ni Pres. Duterte sa mga ayaw magpabakuna kontra #COVID19” with an engagement score of 73049.

At number 5 is Brands with an engagement score of 5,198,507. From last month, engagement score of Brands increased to 52%, also went ahead of the ranking from ten to number 5. The top keywords for brands are lazadamidyearsale, btsmeal, and shopeeph66midyearsale. The post from influencer Christian Antolin is the highest post for the keyword lazadamidyearsale, with an engagement score of 31,000: “PAANO KUNG ANG TRENDING NGAYONG TAON AY TRENDING DIN NOON? HAHAHAHA”

Number six goes to the category Local News with an engagement score of 48,592. Formerly at number 9, the category local news has an increase in engagement of 32% from May to June. Top trending keywords are: paalampinoy, kmjs, and danteph. Paalampinoy is also the highest keyword for the month with an engagement score of 2,500,644 and has been the number 1 trending keyword for two days over 30 days. On the other hand, KMJS also held the top trending keyword fwo times over 30 days. The most engaging post for this category is from ABS-CBN News, BREAKING: Former president Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III has passed away”, with an engagement score of 271,000.

At number 7 is Local Entertainment with an engagement score of 3,945,616. There was a 21% decrease in engagement for the topic for local entertainment which ranked 5th in May and now at Number 7. Young actress “Jillian Ward”, “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano”, and “First Yaya” are the top trending keywords under this category. Jillian Ward also ranked number 1 for one out of 30 days in June. The highest engaging post under this category is the change in profile pic of Jillian Ward, with an engagement score of  126,833.6, this post also had more than 1 million reactions

OPM maintains its rank at number 8 with an engagement score of 3,377,852, a 15% decrease from last month. The top keywords for OPM are “sben19mapa”, “sb19”, and “sb19josh”. Posts on SB19, their collaboration with Ben&Ben and the names of members are the keywords that drive the OPM category. The top engaging post is from SB19, with an engagement score of 15,407.5: SB19 and Ben&Ben – MAPA (Band Version) Official Video out now!

At number 9 is social media with an engagement score of 3,373,573. Most engaging keywords are facebooklive, throwbackthursday, and ootd. The top engaging post for social media is a live mass from Quiapo Church on June 6 with a hashtag Corpus Cristi and an engagement score of  11,086.2.

And wrapping up the top 10 is sports with an engagement score of 1,606,822. This is the first time sports entered the Top 10 and the top keywords for sports are basketball related: “ncaaseason96”, “fibaasiacup”, “labanpilipinas”. Basketball mania is back as Gilas PIlipinas played for the Fiba Asia Cup, whch also ranked number 1 once as a daily trending keyword. The most engaging story for sports is from FIBA Cup page, WHAT A CRAZY ENDING , a game where the Philippines won against South Korea. This has an engagement score of  43,397.6.


Methodology:

Blueprint.Ph collected around1500 keywords for month from the top 50 daily trending keywords that was monitored. These keywords are ranked and classified according to categories. The rankings were based from engagement scores which was computed from the number of comments, shares and reactions per posts. The sum of the engagement scores of keywords under each category was computed, resulting to the monthly top 10.
