Blueprint.PH’s monthly monitoring of trending keywords for May offered changes in rankings. Entertainment, pageants, and e-sports dominated the charts for the month. Korean Wave bagged the number one spot from Faith which comes second; beauty pageants and e-sports grabbed third and fourth places.
Blueprint.Ph collected around 1,500 keywords for the month which were gathered from the daily monitoring of the top 50 trending keywords. These keywords are ranked and classified according to categories. The rankings were based on engagement scores which were computed from the number of comments, shares, and reactions per post.
The sum of the engagement scores of keywords under each category was computed, resulting in the monthly top 10. A total of 149,853, 278 engagement score was computed. Here are the top 10 categories and the significant keywords under each category.
Korean Wave, Faith still on numbers 1 and 2
For the first time this month, Korean Wave topped Blueprint’s monthly scan of trending keywords on Facebook, with an engagement score of 40,750,249 (27.14%) Filipinos into K-Pop and K-Drama enjoyed content from their K-Pop idols, international Korean artists, and K-Dramas.
The top keywords under this category are 방탄소년단, BTS, and BTSButter. Korean international superstars, BTS or 방탄소년단 ranked #1 in the trending keywords 13 days out of 31 days for the month. Also ranked number 1 in the daily trending was Kpop groups TXT (1 day) and Twice (1 day), who will also release new singles for the month of June.
The most engaging post for Korean Wave is BTS Jimin’s teaser photo for their new single Butter, with an engagement score of 198,780.0 for their new single, Butter which also came out this month.
Closely at number 2 is the category Faith, with a total engagement score of 40,528,387 million. The category Faith has 69 unique keywords, where the top keywords are “Quiapochurch”, “500yearsof Christianity”, and “giftedtogive”.
This post from the Quiapo Church page had the highest engagement under Faith, a prayer for mothers during Mother’s Day with an engagement score of more than 81,000.
Miss Universe, E-games, and Covid-19 among the popular keywords
The popularity of pageants among Filipinos is validated in our monthly scan. Miss Universe can be claimed as one of the most awaited events in the country. The keyword “Ms. Universe” got the highest aggregated engagement score at 5.4 million on May 18. At the same time and ranked number 1 for 6 days out of 31 days. The top keywords under this category are Miss Universe, MissUniverse2020, and rabiyamateyo. The post with the most engagement is a post from ABS-CBN, with an engagement score of 305,772.
Following the fandom for pageants is E-sports with an engagement score of 11,521,177. The top keywords under this category are mobilelegendsbangbang, 515eparty, togetherweachievemore. The keyword “mobilelegendsbangbang” trended number 1 on May 7, and the keyword “exeshot”, ranked number 1 for two days out of 31 days on May. Exeshot is an MPL team (Mobile Legends Professional League) that competed in the latest ML tournament.

Live competitions streamed on Facebook by celebrity players and gamers have achieved impressive numbers of posts and engagements, giving proof that gaming is a very popular hobby among Filipinos.
At number five, with a total engagement score of 5,527,067 is Covid-19. Consistently on Top 3 from January to April, Covid-19 or Coronavirus dropped to number five this month. The top 3 trending keywords under this category are “Covid19”, “Coronavirus”, and “Resbakuna”. This post from ABS-CBN news on the Indian variant has reached the Philippines had the highest engagement score at 35,781.
However, daily posts for Covid-19 in publicly available Facebook pages range from 2,000 to 5,000 posts. Covid-19 also ranked number 1 once (on May 3), on the daily trending keywords tally.
Local entertainment follows at number 5 with an engagement score of 5,027,687. Top trending keywords under this category are TV shows, “First Yaya”, “He’s Into Her”, and “Babawiin ko ang Lahat”. Also included under this category is the local version of “Doctor Foster” (doctorfosterph), which trended number 1 in the Philippines on May 8. The highest engaging post under this category is this post from Cinema Bravo on the confirmed cast of ABS-CBN’s adaptation of Korean drama, Doctor Foster (aka The World of the Married). This has an engagement score of 29,609.
Tagging behind local entertainment is social media on number 6, which covers influencers, hashtags, and live videos. This category has an aggregated engagement score of 4,819,521. These most popular keywords are “facebooklive”, “sinonloresca”, and “kingofcatwalk”. Sinon Loresca has been a consistently trending influencer for the past months, especially on issues in Myanmar. For this month, the top engaging post under this category is Sinon Loresca’s cover photo with an engagement score of 12,669.3:
Local entertainment still popular among Filipinos
OPM made it at number 8 with an engagement score of 4,008,802. The top keywords under this category are “sb19mapa”, “sb19”, and “BBMAS”. There are only two OPM artists under this category, which are Ben&Ben and SB19. SB 19 is the hottest OPM artist to date, who made history as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to be nominated as Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards. They also released their new single, Mapa this month. SB19 also topped the trending daily monitor once this month. The most engaging post under this category is, the announcement of SB19’s online concert, Back in the Zone: Online Concert, with an engagement score of more than 19,000:
Number 9 is local news with an engagement score of 3,693,942. Keywords under this category with the highest engagements are KMJS, Raffytulfoinaction, and rtiadubchallenge. KMJS ranked number 1 on May 23. The highest engaging post among the local news posts is:
This post, which an engagement score of 211,111 went viral among Filipino Facebook Users and elicited debate on romanticizing poverty, and what should be done to eradicate it.
Lastly, on 10th spot is brands with an engagement score of 3,420,598. Topping the list under brands are “lazadaph”, “nasalazadayan” and “lazadabigbrandsale”. There are around 12 brands listed under this category. Brands associated with trending keywords had high engagements, such, Lazada served as a platform to vote for Miss Universe, another trending keyword.
