Filipinos have been joining rest of the world in venerating the BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan, currently the world’s top boy band from South Korea. Pinoys in Facebook gave the leading edge to BTS the top spot as the most talked-about Korean entertainment group among the Facebook accounts of more than 80 million Filipinos.

This is one of the findings of a big data scan conducted by data management and political communication management agency BluePrint.PH, on three petabytes of data on Filipinos’ posts on Facebook during the month of April 2021.

BluePrint.PH’s monthly scan of trending keywords placed Korean Wave as second most popular keyword category for April 2021. BluePrint.PH collected a total of 40,135,449.00 data points on Facebook among the top 10 K-pop groups and idols for the month. This translates to a total engagement score of 6.73 million. Engagement score is computed through a measure of the comments, reactions, and shares, which listed the hottest K-pop groups based on what has been trending in Facebook for the month.

BTS, unstoppable at Number 1

Pinoy FB members gave BTS 40 million data points or 57% of the total data points collected for the top 10 most talked-about K-Pop artists. The international superstar group composed of RM, Suga, Jin, J-hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook generated an engagement score of 3.8 million from 11,888 publicly available FB posts about the band.

BTS has released a lot of surprises and content to the pleasure of the millions of BTS Army (or fans) in the world. The top engaging post with an engagement score of 111,466.5 was the #BTS MAP OF THE SOUL ON:E CONCEPT PHOTOBOOK from BTS Official Facebook Page.

Other posts that generated high engagement scores for BTS were their various brand endorsements – Louis Vuitton, Hyundai, Fila, McDonalds, Kloud beer, and locally, Smart Communications. BTS also announced an upcoming single Butter to be released this May 21. The top influencer for BTS is their official Facebook Page, and the top local influencer is a fan service Filipino Page, BTS Noona.  At the same time, we have identified the top post from local pages. Blackpink, Twice, Exo – consistently popular among Filipino fans

Consistently second on the list, is another international superstar in the entertainment world, Blackpink. Blackpink, whose members Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo and Lisa, generated an engagement score of 1.9 million from 4,728 posts by Filipinos on Facebook.

In April, their music video As if it’s your last reached 1 billion views on YouTube since its release in 2017. This announcement posted in their Blackpink official FB page had an engagement score of 129,444.8. Other high posts engagements are Rosé’s teaser poster for the song, Gone, and the music video “Lovesick Girls” reaching 400 million since its release on October 2020.

Occupying the third spot in the top 10 most talked-about K-pop group is the favorite Twice with an engagement score of 314,299. The top post with an engagement score of 9,622, was from the local fan group Twicers, with this photo post: Twice guested in the Kelly Clarkson Show

After Twice is the supergroup, Exo, on the fourth spot. Exo, another consistent entry in our monthly listing, had an engagement score of 286,847 from 1505 posts. The top engaging post in relation to Exo is from Philippine Star, a photo post: A resident of Malabon City set up a community pantry in Barangay Maysilo adorned with photo cards and mini standees of K-pop group EXO on Tuesday

This post had an engagement score of 24,392, and 27,000 love reactions. Another top engaging post was from PHIXO Philippines X EXO post on EXO9thAnnversary.

Kpop groups, awards, movies, and military enlistment

On the fifth spot is Seventeen with 252,322 engagement score from 985 posts. The top post related to Seventeen is their nomination to the Billboard Music Awards under the category, Top Social Artist. Nominated along Seventeen are the super groups BTS, and Blackpink, rising P-Pop group, SB19, and Ariana Grande. This post from ABS-CBN News with an engagement score of 18,392.5  is the top post related to Seventeen.

Another top post for Seventeen is from the FB page, Soompi on the video of Hybe x Ithaca Holdings on celebrating the merger of the two music companies:

The top influencer for Seventeen is the FB page Seventeenism , with 317 post about the group and 121,204 engagement score.

On the sixth spot is Astro with an engagement score of 201,283 from 153 posts. Top post for Astro, (engagement score of 9,630.6) is the news from Soompi, on a new movie by member Cha Eun-woo.

Local fan page, Astro United Philippines is the local influencer for Astro, with 289 posts and engagement score of 20,682.1.

Soloist IU is on the 7th spot with an engagement score of 198,205 from 1042 posts. The top post with an engagement score of 8,381, is from the local fan page, IU Philippines. In the post, she was singing Lilac. Another top trending post was from Soompi, which shared an article “Lee Joon Gi And IU Share Hopes For A 2nd Season Of Their 2016 Drama “Scarlet Heart: Goryeo”

On number 8 is the group NCT with an engagement score of 88,753 from 1,037 posts. The top engaging article for NCT, with an engagement score of more than 4,000, is from allKpop. This was an article about member Winwin hanging out with girls, as captured by the Chinese media

At number 9 is another soloist, and member of Exo, Baekhyun, with an engagement score of 71,483 from 497 posts. Top post for Baekhyun was from local influencer, K-dramaland.tv, “Baekhyun’s BAMBI takes 1st win for today’s Music Bank performance, congratulations!”

Bambi is Baekhyun’s single released in March 20, 2021 and now has 32 million views in Youtube.

On the 10th spot still is ShiNEE with 64,962 engagement points from 1059 posts. Top post for ShiNEE is member Taemin’s revelation to enlist in the military next month. This post from Soompi had 6,117.5 engagement points. Taemin is also a member of SuperM and has also been releasing albums as a solo artist since 2019.
